What you have to ask your self first is, “Do I really need a hidden camera?” If you want to make sure that your babysitter is taking care of your children properly by all means a “Nanny Cam” is in order. Is someone doing damage to your car at night? Is somebody stealing your stuff at work? Whatever your answer is make sure you use a hidden camera, or spy camera, to catch somebody doing something illegal or immoral.
Sometimes people buy hidden cameras or spy cameras for reasons that are not on the up and up. Too often we read in the newspaper about some landlord or neighbor using a hidden camera to spy on a female neighbor. Or placing it in a common area of an apartment building such as the laundry room. Disgusting! When these jerks are caught they usually do a good amount of jail time, as they should.
One way to make sure you are not a victim of a hidden camera or microphone is to purchase and use a signal detector. They are more commonly known as “Bug Detectors”. We have all seen these being used on TV and in the movies. You simply turn the hand held unit on and walk through the room or “sweep” the room. The signal detector picks up the signal transmitted by the hidden camera or microphone and helps you locate its exact position.
“Boy, that was so nice of the landlord to leave that nice wall clock in my bedroom. He is such a nice guy.” Well, think again. When you do a sweep of your apartment don’t be surprised if your bug detector activates when you get close to that wall clock! These days anything you see could be housing a hidden camera. Make sure you do a complete sweep of your apartment. Remember, if you find something, try not to react. Simply leave your apartment and call the police from outside. You don’t want your landlord to know that you have just called the cops.
So, you DO have a good solid excuse to use a hidden camera. Your choices will seem endless. A table lamp, a pair of speakers, even a DVD Player could contain a tiny hidden camera. You will be amazed at the options you will have when it comes to buying a hidden camera.
Just make sure you choose an item that “fits in” to your life style so that it does not raise suspicions. If you buy a Tiffany lamp with a spy camera, and all of your other furniture is Modern, you might raise a few eyebrows. Make sure what you get looks like it belongs there.
You are going to have to make some other decisions too. What type do you want? Do you want an all-in-one hidden camera? How about a wired one or do you prefer wireless.
If you choose the wireless option the hidden camera and a tiny transmitter will be placed inside the unit. The transmitter will send a signal through the air. You then have to have a receiver to pick up that signal. You can then connect the receiver to your TV, monitor or recording device.
Choosing a wired hidden camera is probably the most economical but you have to contend with exposed cords. There will be A/V cords coming out of the device and then they are connected to either your TV or monitor to view the picture or a recorder to record the action.
The newest generation of hidden or spy cameras is the self recording one. The item that you decide on will have a tiny camera AND a recording unit all in one! They usually record onto an SD card that you simply remove and insert into your computer for viewing. You can place these anywhere and they are very mobile.
Make sure you buy a hidden camera that matches your needs. Do you need to record at night time when very little light is available? You better get a low LUX camera. Do you need it to be motion activated? How about a time and date stamp? These are all available and you can find one that fits what you want it to do.
Finally, please, make sure you have good reasons to buy a hidden camera. Don’t be one of those creepy landlords that winds up in jail.
